Preparation
For best results, make sure that the surfaces to be painted are sound, clean and dry. It is especially important that new or bare surfaces are fully dry.
- Remove all loose and defective coatings, stripping back to bare wood if necessary. Pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal may contain harmful lead, so special precautions must be taken if working with these coatings.
- Remove and treat any mould, algae, lichen with . Remove defective glazing material, clean the rebates and any loose or open joints.
- Rotten wood and problem knots should be replaced with new timber. Thoroughly rub down all surfaces to remove any grey, weathered wood and surface sheen from any remaining coatings, and then dust off (refer to your COSHH Assessment).
- Apply 1 or 2 coats of an appropriate knotting solution to any remaining knots.
- Fill any surface defects, open joints etc. with an appropriate filler and replace any missing glazing material with a suitable glazing compound.
Application
We recommend to test a small area before painting the entire surface to ensure compatibility.
- Shake the container thoroughly to mix the Dulux Trade Weathershield Preservative Primer.
- Pour out enough primer for the job into a suitable container. Do not use direct from the can or put any unused primer back into to the container.
- Do not thin.
- Prime all bare wood with 2 coats of Weathershield Preservative Primer including any new or bare replacement beading. Apply the 2nd coat as soon as the first one has soaked in. (typically 2-6 hours).
- Do not allow first coat to fully dry before applying the second coat as this will reduce penetration into the wood and extend the total drying time. Allow 16 hours for second coat to dry.
- Wipe excess primer from surrounding paintwork. New joinery is often factory primed using a stain basecoat, also known as a dual-purpose primer. These materials quickly erode when left exposed and may need to be re-primed. Factory-applied pigmented primers should conform to BS 7956: 2000 (as amended).
- Allow a minimum of 16 hours before overcoating with an appropriate Weathershield paint system.
Note: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin.
